The upcoming Super Bowl 2024 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas marks a significant environmental milestone as it will be powered entirely by renewable energy, a historic first for the event.

Solar Power from the Nevada Desert

The renewable energy powering the game comes from a vast solar farm located in the Nevada desert. With over 621,000 solar panels, this facility can generate enough electricity to power approximately 60,000 residential customers or sustain a large stadium like Allegiant Stadium.

Partnership with the Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders, the stadium’s resident team, have entered a 25-year agreement with NV Energy to purchase power from this solar installation. CEO Doug Cannon stated that the solar farm would provide over 10 megawatts of power for the Super Bowl, equivalent to the energy consumption of 46,000 homes.

Sustainable Features of Allegiant Stadium

Sustainability was prioritized during the construction of Allegiant Stadium. The stadium’s roof is made of a sustainable plastic material that allows in daylight while blocking solar heat, reducing the need for cooling energy. Additionally, the grass field can be moved outdoors to receive natural sunlight, and waste materials are composted or converted into energy.

Recognition from U.S. Secretary of Energy

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm praised the stadium’s renewable energy initiatives during her visit, emphasizing the reliability of renewable power. She highlighted the potential for similar sustainability efforts in other communities.

Energy Storage and Future Goals

The solar farm includes massive batteries to store renewable energy, ensuring a five-hour power supply even during periods of low sunlight. This technology is crucial for the U.S.’s transition to 100% clean electricity by 2035, as outlined by President Biden.

Uncompromised Entertainment

Despite the focus on environmental sustainability, the Super Bowl’s entertainment, including a halftime show featuring performer Usher, will not be impacted. Doug Cannon assured that there is sufficient power to support all entertainment aspects of the event.

The Super Bowl’s shift to renewable energy reflects a growing commitment to environmental stewardship in large-scale events and demonstrates the feasibility of sustainable practices in the sports industry.
